With the iPhone 14 launch smartphone satellite connectivity has now arrived in some global markets, and will likely arrive soon in others, like Japan. But the extent of the opportunity for services beyond emergency communications, such as two way messaging and regular Internet connectivity, is uncertain especially in advanced markets like Japan with strong mobile networks.

Swisscom users had the lowest no signal time and the fastest download speeds in Swiss ski resorts

For skiers, having good mobile service is essential, be it in emergency situations or simply when sharing their pictures and videos on the go from the slope. Ahead of the ski season, Opensignal has analyzed the mobile network experience in the 100 biggest ski resorts in Switzerland. We found that Swisscom users had the fastest overall speeds and 5G Download Speed in the ski resorts and they spent significantly less time with no signal than our Salt and Sunrise users.

日本の交通拠点における5Gの体感:山手線と国際空港

日本に関するOpensignalの最新分析では、日本の国際空港や世界有数の繁華な駅を結ぶ東京の山手線など、交通量の多いエリアでの5Gモバイル・エクスペリエンスについて分析しています。また、山手線内やこれらの主要空港にいる当社のユーザーは、東京や横浜市の平均よりも高い時間、5Gサービスに接続することができました。しかし、通信量の多い地域と都市や日本全体の平均を比較すると、5Gダウンロード・スピードの差はそれほど大きくはありません。

山手線内の5Gユーザーは、17.2%の確率で5Gサービスに接続しており、これは東京と横浜のいずれと比べても2.3~2.6倍高い数値です。このように5Gの利用率が高いのは、日本のオペレーターが山手線の利用者に向けて5Gインフラ展開を行ったことが一因と考えられます。

The 5G experience in Japan’s transport hubs: Yamanote line and international airports

In this latest Opensignal analysis on Japan, we have analyzed the 5G mobile experience in busy high-traffic areas of Japan —  across its international airports and on Tokyo’s Yamanote line, which connects some of the busiest train stations in the world. Our users on the Yamanote line and in these major airports were able to connect to 5G services for a higher amount of time than Tokyo or Yokohama city averages. However, differences in 5G Download Speeds were not as significant when we compared these high-traffic areas with city or Japan-wide averages.

The rural urban divide widens with 5G rollouts in Italy
