In our second U.S. rural analysis (see the first part here), we have investigated smartphone users’ mobile experience in the 50 states using the urban and rural definitions by the U.S. Census Bureau, and found there remains a gap between what our urban and rural users experience.

Ever since smartphone users started consuming video on their phones, it’s become a common assumption that fast download speeds translate to a good mobile video experience. While speed is certainly an indicator of video experience, it is not the only factor to determine the quality of video we see.

Opensignal’s latest analysis of Australian’s mobile network experience reveals striking differences in the experience of our users across the breadth of the country using the three major operators: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. We have used geographic definitions created by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to analyze users’ mobile experience in urban and rural Australia.

Switzerland is moving fast into the 5G era. Despite the challenges posed by its geography, including two mountain ranges — the Alps and the Jura — which combined cover about 70% of the territory, two mobile operators are aiming for nationwide 5G population coverage by year’s end, and the third will likely launch 5G service soon.

As more operators in more countries launch 5G services, Opensignal has again analyzed the maximum speed that our 5G smartphone users have experienced, updating our previous analysis of 5G maximum speeds. As we expected, the 5G experience is evolving quickly. We already see increases in maximum speeds after just two months.

The type of smartphone model affects the quality of mobile network experience that users receive. Newer models, and those with higher user equipment LTE Category support more of the mobile carriers’ network features enabling higher possible speeds. For this reason, smartphone makers create cheaper models with less capable modems and chipsets.

Opensignal analyzed the fluctuations in 4G Download Speeds that our users in the Philippines experienced throughout the day across different regions. We found that, while all users experienced similar speeds at quiet times at night, bigger differences between regions emerged during the day when networks became busy, with our users in Metropolitan Manila — the National Capital Region (NCR) — experiencing significantly faster speeds at congested times.
