The infusion of the 700 MHz airwaves into operators’ 4G networks produced visible improvements in the national scores of our latest Brazil report as operators activated the new frequency band across Brazilian cities. However, we observed a trade-off between increased 4G networks’ reach and 4G Download Speeds.

Opensignal analyzed the download speeds that South African users experience when they connect to mobile networks compared to Wifi, and found that cellular technology provided faster download speeds at all times of the day. Opensignal's data shows our smartphone users on average enjoy 14.8 Mbps in download speed when they access the internet using cellular networks — which we measured by looking at all 3G and 4G readings — but only 8.8 Mbps in download speed when connected to Wifi.

Opensignal analyzed the fluctuations in 4G Download Speeds that our users in Santiago experienced throughout the day across different mobile operators. We found that, while all operators provided a similar mobile experience at quiet times at night, differences between operators emerged during the day when their networks became busy.

Opensignal’s latest report on the Philippines has highlighted how Smart closed the 4G Availability gap with the other incumbent, Globe. Smart and Globe tied for our 4G Availability award, both with scores passing the 70% mark, meaning our users with a 4G device and subscription were able to connect to an LTE network in 7 out of 10 attempts. This is why spectrum auctions are pivotal moments in the telecom industry which can dramatically change the service quality operators will be able to provide for years to come. In fact, the quality of the mobile experiences varies greatly depending on the frequency band users connect to. Higher frequency bands allow for more users to enjoy faster connections, while lower frequency bands cover wider areas but deliver, on average, lower speeds.

In Opensignal’s latest Brazil Mobile Network Experience report published in January, we recorded steady increases in mobile speeds across all operators, although we saw big differences in Download Speed Experience ranging from Oi’s average score of 7.7 Mbps to Claro’s 18.8 Mbps.
