Spotlight on Our Interns: Anmar and Melaku
This year, we had the pleasure of working with two incredible interns: Anmar and Melaku. They came to us eager to learn, and they quickly made their mark on the team. Here’s a glimpse into their journey with us.
1. How would you describe your overall internship experience at Opensignal?
Anmar: “It was an amazing experience that pushed me to grow both professionally and technically. The projects I worked on were meaningful and had real-world impact. Everyone at Opensignal was welcoming and knowledgeable, making it easy to learn from them. I also appreciated the opportunity to meet with senior leaders, which gave me a better understanding of the company’s vision and operations.”
Melaku: “My internship was both exploratory and enlightening. My project within the first half of my internship consisted of developing an AI model and I was given a ton of free will in how I wanted to structure and build this model and even got to present my findings.”
2. What were the most valuable skills and knowledge you gained??
Anmar: “As my first internship, it was a great introduction to business operations and how data fits into the bigger picture. I built on my business acumen and gained technical skills in SQL and Python to analyze large datasets and uncover trends.”
Melaku: “My biggest takeaway was refining my Python programming skills and learning about data pipelines. I gained insight into how different teams use data, which gave me a new perspective on the industry’s evolution.”
3. What project are you most proud of?
Anmar: “One standout project involved analyzing a vendor-provided data sample to identify demographic trends and biases. My analysis uncovered significant discrepancies, leading the team to decide against the purchase—saving resources and influencing strategy. Knowing my work had such a tangible impact was incredibly rewarding.”
Melaku: “I’m especially proud of automating part of the data collection process using OpenAI’s API. It saved the team 15 hours of manual work each week and improved the product’s efficiency. Seeing that impact was really fulfilling.”
4. How did this internship help you grow personally?
Anmar: “Splitting my time between two teams taught me adaptability. Each team had distinct goals, pushing me to learn new tools and ways of thinking. Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of staying curious and being open to feedback.”
Melaku: "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." - Epictetus. My experience reinforced the importance of humility and listening. Whether it was learning from team members or absorbing technical jargon, I learned to be proactive in seeking knowledge and to be curious.”
5. What advice would you give to future interns?
Anmar: “Take ownership of your projects and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. The trust Opensignal places in its interns is incredible—embrace it! And don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it—there’s so much to learn.”
Melaku: “Embrace the learning process. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or propose new ideas—this is a supportive environment where innovation is encouraged.”
