Welcome back to our employee spotlight series! We are excited to introduce you to the exceptional individuals that make up our diverse and talented team.
In this edition, we have the pleasure of introducing Leire, Opensignal’s Legal Counsel, based in northern Spain.
How did your journey start at Opensignal?
I joined Opensignal four years ago, right at the onset of the pandemic. I joined fully remotely at the time, which was still a relatively new approach for many people. But my manager and the entire team were so welcoming and friendly, I managed to learn a lot in a very short span of time.
When I started, I was the sole member of the legal department, so one of the biggest tasks and challenges I faced was to build out the department and team from scratch. The immediate focus was on crafting the right processes and frameworks, and handling all aspects of data privacy. It marked my first opportunity to take on such a challenge, and while it presented its difficulties, that was also the beauty of the experience.
Today, my primary focus revolves around customer contracts, but I also lend a hand with various other in-house legal tasks and I’m a part of the Data Privacy Team.
What do you like the most about your role?
I really enjoy working with the sales team, providing support for our global customer contracts and being involved in negotiations. Each day I have the opportunity to collaborate with a truly global team, from across Asia through to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Working with such a diverse group of people—embracing different cultures and backgrounds within Opensignal and among our clients worldwide—is something that I never get tired of. For me, that's the real beauty of being part of a global organization.
What makes Opensignal different?
Without a shadow of doubt it’s the people. I have worked for global companies before, but the diverse team at Opensignal is truly unique. This brings a broad and diverse approach to the way we work and solve problems. This results in amazing outcomes.
Since the very beginning, I have always felt that every member of the team is very professional and conscientious. The dedication, trust, and competency shown by everyone creates an environment where we consistently operate at a very high level across the board.
What drew you towards a career in law?
I think I have an innate desire to help people. Every day a myriad of issues arise, and being in the role of legal counsel allows me to offer support and assistance, and truly be there for the team.
What do you appreciate most about working at Opensignal?
In addition to the people I mentioned earlier, I highly value the independence and trust given to me that allows me to take full ownership of my work.
I also appreciate the variety inherent in my role - no two issues are the same, and therefore no two solutions are identical. Each day presents a fresh set of challenges.
What was the last book you read?
"The Spinoza Problem" by Irvin Yalom. It’s a novel set in Amsterdam, a mix of two stories and timelines, intertwining the Golden Age of Amsterdam in the 17th century and the tumultuous period of World War II.
What was your first job?
When I was at University, I worked as a translator with my professors while studying Law and Economics. We tackled the translation of several legal books from Spanish to Basque - it was a huge task, but I learned a lot, and to this day, it’s a job I can look back on with pride, knowing I was a part of an impactful project.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Thailand. I have a small island in mind where I could imagine myself living.
How do you unwind after a long day?
Music is a huge part of me, so I play the guitar every day. And I bought a small piano recently. I also like to go on walks or hikes whenever I can, it helps clear my mind.
